What is dermal filler?

Dermal filler describes hyaluronic acid-based (HA) product we place in the face to address the volume loss that occurs with aging. We also use HA filler to augment areas such as the lips or chin where we might not naturally have projection but would like to add to these areas to provide facial harmony.

Volume loss with facial aging occurs all over the face, not just in isolated areas. When HA declines as we age, changes including wrinkles, sagging, and volume loss.

The idea is to perform subtle rejuvenation, restore definition and structure, and enhance your features in a way that highlights you.

Tell me more about HA

HA is a naturally occurring molecule found in the body, most commonly the skin, that helps retain the skin’s natural moisture and softness.

HA used in dermal filler is cross-linked, making a lattice structure that holds moisture in the skin and plumps the surface from underneath.

The higher the molecular weight, the closer the HA strands are fit together to create a stronger bond and deliver greater support. They range from thin to thick, and from soft and flexible to firm and supportive depending on the area of the face we are trying to restore volume.

HA filler was initially developed to provide a nonsurgical option to address volume loss in lips and cheeks. Filler placement is a minimally invasive procedure that temporarily helps restore and refresh your look with minimal downtime.

FDA indications include its use to define cheeks, add definition to lower face, improve undereye hollowing, reduce prominence of folds and lines around the mouth, and augment lips.

Bottom line? Along with the use of biostimulators like Sculptra, lasers and microneedling for collagen repletion and skin integrity, HA filler is one of the many great tools that allow us to take a proactive approach to facial aging!
