Breast Implant Choices

Hi. I'm Dr. Marisa Lawrence, double board certified plastic surgeon. My office is located at 980 Johnson Ferry Road in Atlanta, Georgia, Suite 110.

Today I'm going to speak about breast augmentation surgery. Women consider breast augmentation surgery when they want to increase their breast size or restore breast volume following weight loss or pregnancy. It is... breast augmentation surgery is one of the most popular procedures performed in plastic surgery today. There are many different types of breast implants to consider and here at Marisa Lawrence Plastic Surgery, we're experienced in using all of them.

The first type of implant is a saline implant. This is filled with a sterile salt water at the time of surgery. Saline implants have been FDA approved since 2000. They restore breast volume and improve the shape of the breast but many patients prefer silicone implants because they feel that silicone implants feel like more natural breast tissue. The silicone implants come in different degrees of softness ranging from soft, firmer, more cohesive.

These are the implants that are typically referred to as the gummy bear implants because they maintain their shape, ripple less and remain cohesive in the event of rupture. For those patients who would prefer a saline implant but want a more natural feel to their breasts, there's a third option called the ideal implant. This implant is filled with sterile saline water but it has four shells inside which give it more structure so that it feels a little bit more like a silicone implant. This is an implant that is the best of both implants if you want to take key features of both the silicone and saline implants.
