About Laser Hair Reduction

Laser hair reduction is one of the most common cosmetic treatments in the United States. It is a convenient option for the long-term reduction of hair follicles on the body and face. This procedure frequently leaves the skin looking and feeling smoother and produces long-lasting results compared to other options. Marisa Lawrence Plastic Surgery in Atlanta and Alpharetta, GA offers safe and fast laser hair reduction treatments for women and men who desire hair reduction in common areas, including the legs, back, arms, face, chest, armpits, and intimate areas. Led by double board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Marisa Lawrence, Marisa Lawrence Plastic Surgery utilizes advanced technology by Palomar Icon to provide impeccably smooth results.

Ideal Candidates

Reducing hair follicle growth with a laser is a gentle process that is suitable for most patients. During your consultation, you will talk about your needs, concerns, and goals to help determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure. Ideal patients for laser hair reduction:

  • Have unwanted facial or body hair
  • Are tired of other hair reduction methods (shaving, waxing, depilatory creams, bleaching)
  • Have darker hair with lighter skin
  • Are in overall good health

Procedure Technique

At your laser hair reduction appointment, you can relax in one of our treatment rooms as the needed areas of your skin are cleaned to remove dirt, oil, and moisturizers. During laser hair reduction, a licensed aesthetician will stretch out the skin to provide a direct path between the root of the hair follicle and the laser. The Palomar Icon laser energy will target and disable the hair follicle, which stops it from growing back. Usually, you will need 3 – 5 sessions over a period of 3 – 4 weeks to see your ideal results. Your appointments will be spaced out in order to allow the treated areas time to recover. This also allows time for hair follicles that were in the dormant phase of growth to reach the active growth phase so they can be treated. The state-of-the-art technology we use at Marisa Lawrence Plastic Surgery is able to target the hair follicle alone to preserve the skin in the area being treated.

What to Expect

While the treatment is relatively gentle in nature, your skin may feel like it has a light sunburn since lasers are used. After your session, you will be free to resume your daily activities, but you should refrain from heavy activity or lengthy exposure to the sun for a period of 24 hours to let the treated areas heal. When you get home after your appointment, we recommend anti-inflammatory creams or cold packs to treat any discomfort.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does laser hair reduction cost?
Laser hair reduction is an innovative procedure that can vary in cost, according to the size of the area being addressed, as well as how many sessions will be needed to achieve the final goal. It is important to consider that the cost of waxing accumulates over time. Although laser hair reduction is more costly than waxing or other hair reduction methods, it is generally the most effective and requires fewer sessions than waxing. To help determine the cost of your treatment, we will create a custom treatment plan for you.

How effective is laser hair reduction?
Laser hair reduction is a highly successful hair reduction option. This treatment is considered semi-permanent, meaning that after your recommended number of sessions are complete, you could enjoy the results for years or longer. Patients have found that if/when hair does return, it is very soft and manageable. Additional laser hair reduction treatments can also be scheduled if your hair returns following treatments.

Why do I need multiple laser hair reduction sessions?
As hair follicles grow in various stages, multiple treatment sessions are typically needed to target and destroy each individual follicle. If hair returns between sessions, it is safe to shave without affecting the hair follicle. Laser hair reduction works by removing the hair from the follicle. If a follicle is dormant, it is harder for the laser to read. This is why we spread out your sessions over several weeks to remove each follicle for the very best results.

Does laser hair reduction hurt?
Though the procedure can be considered slightly uncomfortable, it is not a painful procedure. Most of our patients feel a slight sting, much like a sunburn when the laser removes the hair follicle. We offer and can apply a numbing ointment to the surface of your skin before your treatment session. If you have been waxed before, we believe you will find laser hair reduction to be less painful.

Which laser is best to remove hair?
Marisa Lawrence Plastic Surgery is proud to offer the latest hair reduction technology for patients of varying hair types. The Palomar Icon laser we use offers excellent results. We encourage you to ask us more about the Palomar Icon laser system during your private consultation.
